How Student Mentorship Leads to a Successful Career Building?

Due to globalization and the uprising of world economies, job opportunities have risen in tremendous ways, pushing people to undertake mentoring sessions to withstand the rapid development. It is true that general mentorship is crucial for anyone who desires progress; however, student mentorship remains the essential tutoring since it shapes our world’s future. The partnership between the mentor and the mentee outlines the leadership skills seized by the mentor, clearing the way for fresh-graduates to find their dream profession. Nevertheless, the main question that lies: “How does a student mentorship pave the way to a successful career building?”

In order to have a successful career, one must take into consideration that self-investment is the best route for a fruitful career, and it all starts with 3 main stages: “Self-perception, Clear Vision & Goals and S.M.A.R.T Strategy.”

Self-Perception

How can someone be able to attract a positive outcome without knowing him/herself? Self-perception or having a distinct identity, can boost the mentee’s self-confidence through recognizing themselves. According to statistics, student mentees who meet frequently with their mentors are 52% less likely to skip a day of school and 87% of them develop better self- confidence, since undergoing tutorship pushes them to confront any peer pressure. In addition, student mentorship increases social acceptance and academic grades; i.e. students will have a higher approval rate to any job opportunity available. Thus, your mentor’s role is not restricted to teaching; however, he/she can be another version of yourself that mirrors your character and the person you want to become, allocating a clearer identity of your own self.

Clear Vision and Goals

It is well known that highly successful people have clear vision and goals. Students nowadays suffer from lack of orientation, finishing high school level with an unclear vision of what their future looks like and what they actually want to study at university. According to the US Department of Education, 1 out of 3 students change their majors after they get enrolled with their universities, showing a clear problem reciprocal to the lack of having a mentor consulting them. This issue is taken deeply into consideration, since having a target in your life is the foremost motive to continuous daily motivation which keeps a mentee moving forward assertively. Thus, having a mentor while at school or university is one of the best life hacks that someone can undergo, because time is key and if invested wisely, your whole future will be shaped based on clear vision and goals.

S.M.A.R.T Strategy

Working on a successful career does not require only self-perception and having clear goals; nevertheless, a S.M.A.R.T strategy is essential for any life decision taken. A student experiencing mentorship will learn how to take important decisions in life taking into consideration 5 necessary phases: “specific – measurable – attainable – relevant – time-based”. Student mentorship is more than just consultancy; it is a strategy that teaches you how to take fateful choices that shape your future based on S.M.A.R.T.

Mentorship programs are used by 71% of the biggest 500 companies in the world, which in turn experience this strategy, seeing it as another reason for students to tackle it in their early stages of career building.

Student mentorship encourages dreams and provides opportunities through leadership and management skills. Having a successful career is definitely not an easy route nor a magic trick that eventually takes place; however, it is a long-haul relationship between a mentor and his mentee where dreams and goals are translated into a pragmatic strategy. Accordingly, having a clear identity through self-perception, possessing clear visions and goals, and encountering the S.M.A.R.T scheme, are the best ways for a prosperous career plan.
